About Santander statements

Santander UK Current Account statements are downloaded as PDFs from Santander Online Banking or the Santander UK mobile app under 'Statements'. Despite the Santander group's Spanish origin, Santander UK plc operates under UK clearing and statements are in GBP, formatted in British conventions; the file header reads 'Santander UK plc' followed by 'Current Account Statement'.

The account block uses the standard British layout — 'Sort code: 09-01-28 Account number: 45678901' — and the statement period is given as 'Statement from 01 January 2026 to 31 January 2026' using full month names. Transaction dates inside the table switch to the more compact DD/MM/YYYY format. Opening and closing positions are labelled 'Balance brought forward £X,XXX.XX' and 'Balance carried forward £X,XXX.XX', matching the long-standing British high-street format.

The ledger has five visible columns — Date, Description, Money out, Money in, Balance — but in the PDF text each transaction collapses to a single row with two pound figures: the unsigned amount and the new running balance. ConvertStatement's Santander parser recovers the correct sign by comparing prev_balance ± amount against the next balance within a 0.01 tolerance, so the exported CSV, Excel, OFX or QBO file is correctly signed and reconciles to the printed brought-forward and carried-forward totals.

Santander statement format at a glance

Santander UK plc Current Account statements are denominated in GBP — not EUR — and use the date format DD/MM/YYYY for transaction lines, with the header period written out as 'Statement from 01 January 2026 to 31 January 2026' in full month names. Numbers follow US-style 1,234.56 punctuation, every amount is prefixed with £, and the ledger has five visible columns: Date, Description, Money out, Money in, Balance. In the underlying PDF text each row collapses to two pound figures — the unsigned transaction amount and the running balance. Opening and closing positions are labelled 'Balance brought forward £X,XXX.XX' and 'Balance carried forward £X,XXX.XX'. Accounts are identified by a 6-digit sort code such as 'Sort code: 09-01-28' and an 8-digit account number. ConvertStatement converts these PDFs to CSV, Excel, OFX or QBO while reconstructing debit/credit signs from the running balance.

Known Santander parsing quirks

These are real layout details that make Santander PDFs different from other banks. Our dedicated parser handles each one explicitly so the exported CSV, Excel, OFX, or QBO is always correctly signed and dated.

  • Despite being part of the global Santander group, Santander UK plc statements are GBP, not EUR, and use US-style 1,234.56 number punctuation
  • Period header uses full month names: 'Statement from DD MMMM YYYY to DD MMMM YYYY'; transaction rows use the shorter DD/MM/YYYY
  • Sort code is given as 'Sort code: 09-01-28' plus an 8-digit Account number — the account number is masked on export
  • Opening/closing balances use the British convention 'Balance brought forward £X,XXX.XX' / 'Balance carried forward £X,XXX.XX' (not 'Opening Balance')
  • Amounts are unsigned; debit vs credit is reconstructed from the running balance using prev ± amount = balance within a 0.01 tolerance, identical to the Barclays approach

Multi-line handling: Each transaction is one line. Wrapped descriptions from the PDF are normalised into a single line before regex matching.
