About Capital One statements

Capital One statements are downloadable from capitalone.com under Statements & Documents (separate flows for credit cards and 360 checking/savings), or from the Capital One mobile app. The header reads 'Capital One' and the account is identified as 'Account ending in 1234' rather than a fully masked digit string. The statement period appears either in long form, 'January 1, 2026 - January 31, 2026', or as a numeric range like '01/01/2026 - 01/31/2026'.

Credit card statements (Quicksilver, Venture, Savor, Platinum) use four columns: Trans Date, Post Date, Description, Amount. Rows are grouped under 'Payments, Credits and Adjustments' / 'Payments and Credits' and 'Purchases' / 'New Charges', plus an 'Interest Charge Calculation' table at the end. The sign of each amount is implied by its section: purchases must be flipped to negative, payments to positive. Capital One 360 checking statements use a tighter Date | Description | Amount | Balance layout and sometimes emit fully concatenated rows like 'Description01/31/2013$2.49$1,189.42' when PDF text extraction loses column boundaries.

ConvertStatement parses both variants in memory, keeps Trans Date as the canonical date, applies section-aware sign flipping, drops Opening Balance and Closing Balance lines, and exports CSV, Excel, OFX, or QBO files suitable for QuickBooks, Xero, or Wave.

Capital One statement format at a glance

Capital One statements come in two distinct formats: Capital One 360 checking PDFs and Capital One credit card PDFs (Quicksilver, Venture, Savor, Platinum). Both use US dollars and the MM/DD or MM/DD/YYYY date convention with comma-thousands amounts (1,234.56). Credit card statements always print two leading dates on every transaction row — a Transaction Date followed by a Post Date — before the merchant description and the amount, and they are split into 'Payments and Credits' and 'Purchases' / 'New Charges' sections whose section header decides the sign of each amount. The account number is typically printed as 'Account ending in 1234'. Capital One 360 checking statements use a simpler Date | Description | Amount | Balance layout, but occasionally collapse all four columns into a single space-less line like 'Description01/31/2013$2.49$1,189.42', which ConvertStatement handles with a dedicated regex while skipping Opening Balance and Closing Balance lines, and then exports clean CSV, Excel, OFX, or QBO ready for QuickBooks.

Known Capital One parsing quirks

These are real layout details that make Capital One PDFs different from other banks. Our dedicated parser handles each one explicitly so the exported CSV, Excel, OFX, or QBO is always correctly signed and dated.

  • Credit card statements always print two leading dates — Trans Date then Post Date — and the parser keeps Trans Date and discards Post Date
  • Sign of the amount depends on section: rows in 'Purchases' / 'New Charges' are forced negative, rows in 'Payments and Credits' are forced positive (absolute value)
  • Capital One 360 checking PDFs can collapse columns into one tokens-no-spaces line; the parser has a dedicated regex for the concatenated case
  • Account number is normally given as 'Account ending in 1234' rather than a fully masked 16-digit string
  • Concatenated rows that include the word 'balance' (Opening/Closing Balance) are skipped to avoid polluting the transaction list

Multi-line handling: Single-line rows are the norm, but Capital One 360 checking PDFs sometimes emit a fully concatenated row with no whitespace separators ('Description01/31/2013$2.49$1,189.42'); a dedicated regex handles that, and 'Opening Balance' / 'Closing Balance' rows are explicitly skipped.
